Nevermore
Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore— While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, as of someone gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door. “Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door— only this and nothing more.”
Edgar Allan Poe’s dark and dreamy storytelling has fascinated readers for years. There is something so intriguing about peering into the mind of a deeply disturbed artist. His stories have inspired countless films, songs, and artworks. His literary works have built up a massive cult following. Poe’s own life was like one of his stories. He wrote about his disdain for life and the mediocrity surrounding him. Poe married his young cousin and had a bittersweet life as she became chronically ill. Eventually, Poe died in a terrifying and mysterious way. Aside from alcoholism, historians and biographers have suggested alternative causes of death being lesions on the brain, epilepsy, tuberculosis, cholera, syphilis and even rabies. He left his admirers in a constant state of curiosity and wonder. In his own strange way, Poe was able to bring a little magic into the world.
Nevermore attempts to capture the whimsy, chaos, and magic that loomed in the mind of Edgar Allan Poe. It tells the story of the ravens as they teased the immortal Poe. His portrait describes the time in which he lived and the limitations he faced in his daily life. The steampunk mask and array of whimsical gadgets hide his face. The mask is a representation of the disconnect Poe had with his reality and the air of mystery that constantly surrounded him.
